When to start your FNU placement search

Your clock starts with the projected Clinical Bound term

In your first term, Academic Advising gives you a degree audit showing a "Projected Clinical Bound Term," and you are assigned a Regional Clinical Faculty member (RCF). Everything else hangs on that term. FNU says it "highly recommend[s] finding appropriate preceptors early in the program" (FNU Catalog, Summer 2026).

Each program of study also carries the milestone "Submit Clinical Site Approval Form (for each clinical site)" during the didactic terms, several terms ahead of Clinical Bound. The table shows where Clinical Bound falls in FNU's October 2025 programs of study.

A full-time PGC student reaches Clinical Bound at the start of term 4, about nine months after starting (three 11-week terms plus breaks, our arithmetic). That is why PGC students feel the squeeze first.

Why the search has to run months ahead of credentialing

Clinical Credentialing starts only after your RCF accepts the CSAF. It then needs a signed affiliation agreement with the site, proof the site carries professional liability insurance, a fully credentialed preceptor and, where required, a Pre-Clinical Site Visit. FNU's catalog says credentialing sites "can take several months."

Some states add a step of their own. The catalog notes that "some states require advance notice and approval" for clinicals, without naming them. Our state rules page covers what is known.

The four-to-six-month figure comes from an FNU Regional Clinical Faculty job posting (posted September 2025 on a third-party job site), which describes the RCF approving the clinical plan in that window. FNU's own Clinical Site Preparation Timeline sits behind the portal login, so read it in Banyan Tree for your cohort and treat the posting as a rough guide.

A term-by-term countdown

Here is the order FNU's catalog and portal describe, laid against your terms. Exact weeks vary by cohort, so check them against the login-only timeline.

1. First termGet your projected Clinical Bound term and your RCF. Start working the Community Map and your own network, and read the preceptor rules for your track.
2. Didactic termsSecure a preceptor commitment, contact your RCF, then submit the CSAF through the Community Map and record the rotation in My Clinical Plan.
3. The term before Clinical BoundClinical Credentialing emails you in Week 1, runs three information sessions and sets a Week 5 due date for CastleBranch compliance. Missing it blocks registration and "may result in late registration fees."
4. Registering for Clinical BoundYou can't register until a site has been identified and submitted to Clinical Credentialing. The catalog also expects a complete clinical plan covering every visit type and your hours.
5. Around Clinical BoundComplete the Pre-Clinical or Transition to Clinical Interview with your RCF and an orientation meeting with your preceptor. After the five-day session, your RCF gives final release before the first clinical day.

Term dates to plan around

FNU runs four 11-week terms a year with a two-week break between them. In 2026, Clinical Bound runs as a series of Monday-to-Friday sessions in the first weeks of each term; the Fall 2026 sessions begin October 5 and run weekly, with the last ending November 13.

Later revisions of the 2026 calendar and the full 2027 calendar need an FNU login. Confirm dates in Banyan Tree before you book travel or give a preceptor a start week.

How long the practicum itself runs

Once released, you have 750 clinical hours over at least 19 weeks if you start clinical in 2025 or later. FNU says the practicum "can be completed in 4 to 10 months" and suggests planning two to three 11-week terms.

A preceptor needs the weekly load before they commit. The catalog sets minimums of 20 hours a week in your first clinical course, 28 in the second and 24 in the third. It caps clinic time at 40 hours a week, while FNU's website lists 32 for midwifery, depending on call. Clinical hours explains what counts toward the total.

Build those weeks into the ask. A preceptor who says yes to a rotation and only later learns it means 28 hours a week for a full term may not be able to keep that yes.

If the clock slips

If your projected Clinical Bound term changes, the catalog expects you to tell your RCF, your preceptor or preceptors, your Clinical Credentialing Coordinator and your Academic Advisor. A preceptor who planned around one term may not be available the next, so tell them early and ask plainly whether the new dates still work.

Without a complete clinical plan by registration, the catalog warns you "may need to take an Academic Hiatus." FNU limits students to two hiatus terms in any 365 days, and each lost term moves your graduation. Our page on delayed graduation walks through the knock-on effects.

If your projected term is still several terms away, that is the best time to talk, because the search can wait for the right preceptor instead of the first one.
