FNU PMHNP clinicals: start with a prescribing psychiatric preceptor

Credits, terms and how long the PMHNP takes

FNU launched its PMHNP program in 2017. The MSN carries 48 credits, spread over 8 full-time terms with Clinical Bound in the sixth, or 12 part-time terms with Clinical Bound in the tenth. The 35-credit certificate schedules Clinical Bound for the fourth of 6 full-time terms or the seventh of 9 part-time terms. FNU's PMHNP page says the MSN typically takes two to three years and the certificate can often be finished in about 18 months.

Your didactic courses are psychiatric from the start: MH705 Roles and Modalities of Care, MH707 assessment across the lifespan, MH701 psychopharmacology and neuroscience, MH708 psychotherapy, MH709 transition to practice and MH720 substance use disorder. MSN students also take PC701, PC705, PC707 and PC716, but not PC719, which the other tracks share.

Terms are 11 weeks and FNU has four starts a year. You start with three days at Frontier Bound in Versailles, Kentucky, and in your first term you are assigned an RCF and a projected Clinical Bound term.

The prescriber rule and who else can precept

FNU accepts four kinds of PMHNP preceptor, each with at least a master's degree: a PMHNP, a psychiatric-mental health CNS with prescriptive authority, a psychiatrist, or a licensed therapist with a master's degree and licensure in the state of practice. Time with psychiatrists has no limit. Time with a therapy provider is capped at 135 hours.

Your RCF assigns a Clinical Bound date only after accepting a CSAF with a preceptor who has psychiatric prescribing authority. On top of that, every preceptor must hold an unencumbered US license and have a minimum of one year's relevant experience in an advanced-practice or medical role, and none can be a relative or be based at a site owned or run by a relative or household member. Visit counts across the lifespan

The PMHNP clock-hour minimum is 750, over 19 weeks of clinical, for clinical courses starting in 2025 or later. Inside those hours FNU requires:

• 300 medication management visits
• 50 child or adolescent visits, 50 adult visits and 20 geriatric visits
• 20 acute or crisis care management experiences
• 50 substance use disorder management visits
• 20 psychotherapy sessions

At 300, medication management is the largest count on the list, which is another reason to build the plan around a prescriber. The age bands matter too: an adult-only clinic leaves your 50 child and adolescent visits to another site, and you may use up to four.

PMHNP students get one exception to FNU's observation rule. Observed-only visits normally do not count toward required experiences, but observed therapy visits do. Observation at a specialty site still does not count toward your hours.

MH750 to MH753: the clinical block

MSN and PGC students share the same clinical courses. FNU's PMHNP page notes that Clinical Bound includes simulated patient encounters, and the catalog sets a weekly minimum for each practicum even though FNU does not publish hours per course.

Daily and weekly ceilings apply as well: 10 clinic hours and 40 hours respectively. PMHNP students send only the end-of-course EDAT, with no mid-course MDAT, and every preceptor completes a DDAT each week through the Preceptor Login.

Telehealth: far more room than other tracks

From 2025 clinical starts, PMHNP students may log as many as 450 telehealth hours, in the MSN and the PGC alike. Nurse-midwifery and WHNP students are held to 20% of their hours and FNP students to 10%, so psychiatric telehealth gives you far more flexibility than any other FNU track.

Every telehealth visit is still bound by the patient's state: your nursing licensure has to satisfy that state's requirements. That can matter more in psychiatry, where a telehealth practice may see patients across several states. FNU's public material is silent on whether telehealth patients located in New York can count for a student based elsewhere, so ask your RCF before you plan on it. New York, licenses and what FNU provides

PMHNP students cannot train in New York; the only exception is a federal government facility in the state, and residents who enroll do their clinicals elsewhere. In other states, you train only where you hold an unencumbered RN license or are eligible under the nurse licensure compact. The New York page has the details.

FNU's PMHNP page puts the split plainly: students identify their own local preceptors, and FNU supports the process and manages the site's legal and administrative requirements. That support includes Clinical Advisors assigned by track, the Community Map with its 20,000-plus sites and preceptors, and an RCF who signs off on your plan and sees your primary site before you start.

Clinical Credentialing then signs the affiliation agreement and credentials your preceptor, which FNU says can take several months. FNU staff describe plan approval by the RCF landing four to six months ahead of Clinical Bound.
