Frontier Bound: the three days that start your clinical search

What Frontier Bound is and who attends

Frontier Bound is a three-day new student orientation held on FNU's campus at 2050 Lexington Road in Versailles, Kentucky. The catalog makes it a requirement before coursework for MSN and PGC students, and FNU's admissions FAQ calls it the new 3-day student orientation. It is the first of your two campus visits; the second is the five-day Clinical Bound session just before your practicum.

Sessions run in several waves before each term. For MSN and PGC class 222, which starts coursework on January 4, 2027, the 2026 academic calendar lists sessions on November 15 to 17 and on December 1 to 3, 6 to 8, 9 to 11 and 14 to 16. The Bounds pages on the Banyan Tree portal carry event details for admitted students.

FNU's historic campus was in Hyden, Kentucky. FNU bought the Versailles land in 2017, and by May 2022 every Frontier Bound and Clinical Bound session ran in person there. DNP students attend a separate three-day DNP Bound, their only required campus visit, and the calendar also lists a one-day DNP Virtual Bound for each DNP cohort.

Before you travel: the Frontier Bound Compliance package

Every degree-seeking student completes extra admission requirements before Frontier Bound: a background check, proof of immunizations and current medical record information. You order the Frontier Bound Compliance package through CastleBranch, FNU's compliance vendor, and pay CastleBranch directly.

FNU's Bounds page warns that missing the deadline “may result in the cancellation of your admission.” The same page asks for two more uploads: the certificate from the Sexual Assault Prevention course, which runs on Vector Solutions, and your NPI number, applied for under taxonomy code 390200000X. What happens for clinicals during the three days

Most of Frontier Bound is orientation to FNU itself, but two clinical steps happen there. The catalog says Clinical Outreach and Placement gives students access to the Community Map at Frontier Bound, and students then attend information sessions on credentialing.

The Community Map is FNU's database of sites and preceptors that Frontier students have used before, and FNU describes it as holding over 20,000 active clinical sites and preceptors across all 50 states. It is also where you later submit the Clinical Site Approval Form (CSAF). Getting your access working on campus, while staff are in the room, saves a round of email later.

The credentialing sessions explain the part of the process students tend to underestimate. Once your RCF accepts a site, Clinical Credentialing signs an affiliation agreement with it, exchanges certificates of insurance and credentials the preceptor, and the catalog warns this can take several months. Hearing that in your first week is the best argument for starting the search early.

Five things to settle before you leave Versailles

Use the time on campus to leave with answers rather than questions. A short checklist for the three days:

• Confirm you can log in to the Community Map and run a search for your track near home.
• Find out who your Clinical Advisor is. FNU assigns Clinical Advisors by program track, and they help students locate sites and preceptors.
• Write down the order FNU uses: preceptor commitment, then a CSAF through the Community Map, then RCF acceptance, then credentialing.
• Note the family rule: no site owned or run by a family or household member or where you hold an ownership stake, and no family member as your preceptor.
• If you already have a preceptor commitment, keep their details handy; FNU asks applicants who have one to list it on the enrollment application.

None of this commits you to a site. It simply means your search can begin in your first term instead of your third, when Clinical Bound is already close.

Your first term: an RCF and a projected Clinical Bound term

1. An RCF is assignedFNU's Bounds page says students are assigned a Regional Clinical Faculty member and a projected Clinical Bound date at the start of the first term. RCFs generally live in your region and serve as your primary advisor during clinical coursework.
2. Your degree audit shows the targetAcademic Advising gives each student a degree audit showing a Projected Clinical Bound Term. That term is the date your whole clinical plan works back from.
3. The search startsFNU highly recommends finding preceptors early in the program, and every program of study places the CSAF milestone in the didactic phase, several terms before Clinical Bound.
4. Your RCF hears from you before any CSAFThe catalog asks students to contact their RCF before submitting a CSAF, so the first conversation should come before the first form.

After Frontier Bound: turning the map into a preceptor

If you come home from Versailles with a Community Map login and no replies yet, that is often when students reach us.
