Idaho preceptors and clinical sites for FNU students
Idaho is open to every FNU track, and your RN requirement is met by any multistate compact license. What Idaho's rules don't settle is whether an out-of-state program like FNU's owes the Board any notice or approval; the Board asks such schools to contact it directly, so check with your Clinical Advisor.

An open question: out-of-state programs in Idaho
Idaho's nursing rules (IDAPA 24.34.01.150) and Idaho Code 54-1406 cover approval of nursing education programs offered in Idaho. Neither has a specific provision on clinical placements by out-of-state programs. Under "Out of State/Online Nursing Programs," the Board of Nursing's page tells schools located outside Idaho to email its licensing staff about requirements and approval.
So public sources leave the rule for FNU unclear. That is a matter between FNU and the Board, and FNU's Clinical Credentialing team is the one that works to meet board requirements. Before you commit to an Idaho site, ask your Clinical Advisor whether any Idaho step applies and how much time it adds.
Idaho's requirement for out-of-state programs is unclear in the rules. Settle it with your Clinical Advisor before any start date is offered to a preceptor.
What Idaho law does say about APRN students
Idaho's student rule, IDAPA 24.34.01.100.12.a, reaches the RN (current Idaho license or privilege) who has matriculated into a nationally accredited APRN program: such a student may practice as an APRN, but only where that practice is built into the curriculum as an integral part. Idaho Code 54-1412 also exempts "students enrolled in approved nursing education programs performing functions incident to formal instruction" from licensure.
The Board's education policy HP-BON-Education 1, adopted April 10, 2024, says clinical preceptors in all nursing programs must hold licensure no lower than the level the student is working toward. It also expects faculty with primary responsibility for APRN role and population courses to hold an Idaho APRN license. How that policy reaches an out-of-state program isn't spelled out, so if your plan leans on a preceptor who isn't an NP or CNM, raise it early.

By 2025 Census estimates, the Boise City metro has 864,243 people, Coeur d'Alene 191,864, Idaho Falls 173,851 and Twin Falls 123,901. Kootenai Health in Coeur d'Alene is one large system; St. Luke's Health System is another, as is Saint Alphonsus Health System. Think of them as names to ask about, not sites known to take FNU students.
Idaho's small towns are the rural communities FNU's mission puts first. If the only practice nearby is your employer, read your syllabus and program guidelines, since FNU leaves workplace clinicals to them and requires your student role to stay clearly separate from your job. Licensing for Idaho clinicals
Idaho's Nurse Licensure Compact membership began January 19, 2018, and the IDAPA student rule speaks of a current Idaho license or privilege, which a multistate license from a compact state provides. If you hold only a non-compact license, get an Idaho license first. Telehealth follows the patient's state. Idaho has not enacted the APRN Compact. See RN licenses for clinicals.

Does FNU need Idaho Board of Nursing approval for my clinicals?
Idaho's public rules don't say. They cover programs offered in Idaho and have no specific provision on clinical placements by out-of-state programs, and the Board asks schools outside Idaho to contact it about requirements. Ask your Clinical Advisor whether FNU has an Idaho step for your site and how it affects timing.
Can I practice as an APRN student in Idaho during FNU clinicals?
Yes, within the curriculum. The governing rule is IDAPA 24.34.01.100.12.a. It lets a student matriculated in an APRN program with national accreditation, holding a current Idaho license or privilege as an RN, practice as an APRN where the curriculum makes that practice integral. You still work only under your FNU-approved preceptor; FNU treats unsupervised advanced practice as grounds for automatic dismissal.
How does AANP rate NP practice in Idaho?
Full practice. AANP lists Idaho that way, with no added transition condition on record for new NPs. That describes NP practice after licensure. While you are a student, FNU's preceptor rules, and possibly Idaho's preceptor policy, decide who can supervise you.
Can part of my Idaho clinical plan be telehealth?
Yes, up to a cap that depends on your track. Midwifery and WHNP students may count a fifth of their hours and FNP students a tenth (sitting in the preceptor's office), while a PMHNP student whose clinicals started in 2025 or later has a 450-hour allowance. Licensing follows each patient's state, so ask where an Idaho practice's telehealth patients live.
