Nevada clinicals for FNU students: license first, questions early

The board rule for internet-delivered programs

NAC 632.703 has any nursing program running part of its program in Nevada file a report on a Board form, backed by proof of accreditation or approval, evidence of compliance with Nevada's nursing statutes and rules, and yearly school reports. A program delivered over the internet or in another nontraditional format may not provide clinical instruction in Nevada without Board approval, and faculty teaching in Nevada must hold Nevada licenses.

The rule draws no line between graduate, post-licensure and pre-licensure programs. A Board list dated September 1, 2026 names the out-of-state schools cleared for clinical-only operation in Nevada. Every one runs a pre-licensure ADN or BSN program, and FNU does not appear. How FNU's graduate placements fit under this rule isn't spelled out in FNU's public pages, so put the question to your Clinical Advisor before you secure a Nevada site.

How the board expects preceptors to work

A 2005 Nevada board practice decision on precepted clinicals sets conditions that line up with how FNU already runs its practicum:

• Faculty must direct all student clinical experiences. At FNU, your RCF approves the plan and grades the course with input from preceptors.
• The preceptor has to be on site, and two students is the most they may supervise at once.
• Faculty must stay reachable while you're in clinic. FNU's RCF contacts your preceptor monthly and you every two weeks.
• Preceptors receive orientation and written objectives from the program. FNU uses The Gift of Precepting course and its preceptor guide.

The two-student limit matters when you approach a busy practice that already hosts students from other schools. Ask how many students the preceptor will have during your terms.

Full practice, with a prescribing threshold

AANP classes Nevada as full practice, with one limit worth knowing: absent a physician-approved protocol, Schedule II prescribing requires the NP to have either two years of clinical experience or 2,000 clinical hours. A newer NP preceptor may prescribe differently from a senior one.

That matters most in medication-heavy tracks. FNU's PMHNP students need 300 medication management visits, so ask a prospective psychiatric NP preceptor how controlled-substance prescribing works in their practice. FNU's own floor still applies to every preceptor: one year in an advanced-practice role (preceptor requirements).

Licensing for Nevada clinicals and telehealth

Nevada isn't a compact state and has no pending legislation to join, so a multistate license from elsewhere gives you no practice privilege here. A board practice decision ties care of any patient located in Nevada to holding a Nevada license, and among the activities it names is nursing education with direct patient contact.

That reaches telehealth too. FNU requires you to meet licensing rules where the patient lives, and Nevada's board takes the same view, so a telehealth panel with Nevada patients needs a Nevada license. See the RN license guide and telehealth caps.

Las Vegas, Reno and the rest of Nevada

Nevada's two big metros are Las Vegas-Henderson-North Las Vegas, at about 2.4 million people, and Reno, at about 579,000; Carson City is far smaller. Renown Health and The Valley Health System are among the large systems. So are Sunrise Health System and University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, and Dignity Health runs hospitals in Las Vegas and Henderson. These show where students search; none is known to have committed to FNU students.

Beyond those metros, FNU's rural clinical focus is the better guide. Midwifery students should note that Nevada's online-program rule doesn't carve out any track, and FNU still asks for 40 births with at least 8 in a hospital.
