Finding FNU clinicals in New Jersey
Every FNU track can do clinicals in New Jersey, and a multistate RN license from your compact home state covers you here. The catch for north Jersey sits across the Hudson: FNU students who live outside New York can't train in New York, apart from federal facilities, so your search stays on this side of the river.

New Jersey in brief
- Licensing body: the New Jersey Board of Nursing, part of the Division of Consumer Affairs.
- Nurse Licensure Compact: in effect since November 15, 2021. The APRN Compact is not enacted.
- AANP practice environment: reduced. NPs keep joint protocols with a collaborating physician to order medications and devices.
- FNU tracks: all of them. Per FNU's state license page, its programs satisfy New Jersey's educational requirements for licensure in all four specialties.
Finding the preceptor and site is your job here too. Your Clinical Advisor and the Community Map support the search, and once your RCF accepts the CSAF, Clinical Credentialing signs the affiliation agreement.
What joint protocols mean for your preceptor
A New Jersey NP who prescribes does so under joint protocols with a collaborating physician. That doesn't change FNU's own tests: your preceptor still needs a clean US license, a year or more in an advanced practice role, and no family tie to you.
It can help with the hours, though. An FNP student may log as much as two-fifths of the practicum with physicians or PAs, and for WHNP students, visits a physician supervises count toward the required totals. When an NP agrees to precept, ask whether the collaborating physician would also be willing to be credentialed. The preceptor requirements page lists the caps for every track.
Does New Jersey regulate out-of-state programs?
No New Jersey Board of Nursing rule on record requires approval or notice before an out-of-state program places students in New Jersey clinical sites. The Board's accreditation rules, N.J.A.C. 13:37 Subchapter 1, cover programs run by institutions the state licenses, and section 13:37-1.10(c) deals only with New Jersey programs using clinical agencies in other states.
One point to confirm: any guidance posted on the Board's website is still to be reviewed. Clinical Credentialing meets state board requirements for placements, so confirm with your Clinical Advisor or Credentialing Coordinator before you count on a start date.
North, south and shore: where students look
Over seven million New Jerseyans live in the New York-Newark-Jersey City metro area, about 1.4 million in the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington area, and smaller hubs sit around Trenton-Princeton and Atlantic City-Hammonton. The large systems include RWJBarnabas Health, Hackensack Meridian Health, Atlantic Health System, Virtua Health and Cooper University Health Care in Camden. Treat them as places to start asking, not places that have agreed to host FNU students.
South Jersey students can look west too. Pennsylvania put the compact into effect in July 2025, so a multistate license from a compact home state works in Philadelphia; see our Pennsylvania page.
Living in New Jersey rules out New York clinicals on every FNU track, midwifery included, unless the site is a federal government facility.
Licenses, telehealth and the New York exception
FNU checks through Nursys Quick Confirm that your RN license is unencumbered and valid in every state where you train. If New Jersey is your compact home state, your multistate license covers New Jersey and other compact states. New York residents training in New Jersey are the exception: a New York license is single-state, so they need a license New Jersey recognizes. For midwifery students, FNU's count applies unchanged: 40 births, eight or more of them in hospital, ideally under a CNM or CM as the main preceptor.

Questions FNU students ask
I live in Bergen County. Can I do FNU clinicals in Manhattan?
Not at a regular site. FNU bars New York clinicals for anyone living outside the state, on every track. A federal facility in New York, such as a VA site, is the exception, and it goes through the usual CSAF, RCF review and credentialing. Most north Jersey students build their plan inside New Jersey.
Does New Jersey require FNU to file anything before my rotation starts?
No Board of Nursing rule on record requires notice or approval from out-of-state programs, though guidance posted on the Board's website is still to be checked. FNU's Clinical Credentialing handles state board requirements for placements. Ask your Credentialing Coordinator whether New Jersey adds any step for your site.
Can a physician at my New Jersey NP's practice precept part of my hours?
Yes, inside FNU's caps. Physician or PA time can make up to 40% of an FNP practicum, physician-supervised WHNP visits count toward required numbers, and PMHNP students have no time cap with psychiatrists. Whoever you see patients with must be credentialed by FNU before you start.
Will my New Jersey multistate license work for a rotation in Pennsylvania?
If you live in New Jersey and hold its multistate license, yes: Pennsylvania has been a compact member since July 7, 2025. FNU still verifies your license in every clinical state through Nursys Quick Confirm, so list the Pennsylvania site in your plan early.
