Washington State clinicals for Frontier Nursing University students
Washington is one of the few states where FNU publishes its own approval: FNU says it is approved to provide practice experiences in Washington for every MSN and PGC track and the DNP. Two state conditions travel with that approval. Placements are meant for Washington residents, and your preceptor can't be a relative or a personal friend.

FNU's Washington approval and what it covers
Under WAC 246-840-571, an out-of-state distance learning nursing program must get approval from the Washington State Board of Nursing (WABON) before placing students in clinical or practice experiences in Washington. FNU's accreditation page states its approval under the name Washington State Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission and links to WABON's roster of approved out-of-state programs.
The approval names all MSN and PGC tracks, which covers nurse-midwifery, FNP, WHNP and PMHNP, plus ADN-MSN, the Companion DNP and the DNP. Keeping it is FNU's job: the rule asks the program to show equivalency to Washington standards, to supervise and evaluate students it has in the state, to maintain national accreditation, and to report annually.
The residency condition
Per WABON, approved out-of-state placements are "authorized only for students who are residents of Washington state," and that exceptions are handled case by case. If you live in Washington, this works for you. If you live across the river in Oregon and hoped to use a Vancouver site, plan on an exception request and talk to your Clinical Advisor before a preceptor commits; our Oregon page covers that side.
The rules may shift. WABON opened rulemaking on December 5, 2025 by filing a CR-101 covering its education rules, WAC 246-840-500 through 246-840-571; one aim is removing barriers related to clinical placements.
FNU's Washington approval is for Washington residents. If you live elsewhere, a Washington site needs a case-by-case exception first.
Preceptor rules Washington adds to FNU's
- Whoever precepts an ARNP student needs an active, unencumbered license as an ARNP, MD or DO, or another state's equivalent license.
- A preceptor may not be related to you or be a personal friend. FNU already bars family members; Washington adds friends.
- A Washington ARNP license is required of out-of-state program faculty teaching ARNP practice in Washington. That falls on FNU, not on you.
Watch the overlap. FNU's track rules count physician and PA time toward FNP hours (to a 40% ceiling) and therapist time toward PMHNP hours (to 135), yet Washington's rule lists only ARNP, MD and DO licenses. Licensing now that Washington is a compact state
Washington implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact on January 31, 2024. If you live in Washington, a Washington license covers your clinicals here, and it can be multistate. A multistate license from another compact state also covers Washington, which FNU accepts as compact eligibility. Oregon is a non-compact neighbor, and a single-state license from there doesn't.

The state preceptor grant, and why it skips FNU
WABON administers the Washington State Student Nurse Preceptorship Grant, which the legislature created. In quarterly cycles it pays eligible preceptors (ARNPs, RNs and LPNs with at least a year of experience) for each student they precept. WABON is explicit that "out-of-state programs don't qualify, even if the clinical hours take place in Washington." A preceptor who takes you on can't claim it.
What FNU offers instead is its own package: an honorarium based on program and hours, a 6-hour CE course, 10% off non-degree FNU courses and DynaMed access. Say so up front when you ask; the outreach guide has more.
Seattle to the Tri-Cities, and why students choose us
Large systems include Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, PeaceHealth, MultiCare Health System and UW Medicine, along with Renton-based Providence, which includes Providence Swedish. Questions FNU students ask
Is Frontier Nursing University approved for clinicals in Washington?
FNU says yes. Its accreditation page states that it is approved by Washington's nursing commission to provide practice experiences for all MSN and PGC tracks, ADN-MSN, the Companion DNP and the DNP, and it links to the board's out-of-state program list. The approval sits with FNU; your site and preceptor still go through the RCF and Clinical Credentialing.
Can I do FNU clinicals in Washington if I don't live there?
Only by exception. Approved out-of-state placements, according to WABON, are authorized for Washington residents, and it decides exceptions case by case. If you live in another state and a Washington site is your best option, raise it with your Clinical Advisor early, and remember you'd also need a Washington or multistate license.
Can my Washington preceptor apply for the state preceptor grant?
Not for an FNU student. The Washington State Student Nurse Preceptorship Grant excludes out-of-state programs, even when every clinical hour happens in Washington. FNU pays its preceptors an honorarium after the practicum instead, based on the program and the number of hours, and some employers don't let providers accept individual payments.
Could Washington's rules for out-of-state programs change soon?
They might. Rulemaking began when WABON filed its CR-101 on December 5, 2025, covering the education rules that govern out-of-state placements, with removing clinical placement barriers among its aims. Until new rules are adopted, the approval list and residency condition stand, so ask your Clinical Advisor for the latest.
