Illinois raises no track-specific barrier for FNU students. The license is what sets your timeline.

Reduced practice and who precepts you

AANP classes Illinois as reduced practice. Per its state note, NPs in select settings need one of two things: a physician collaborative agreement, or completed practice and CE requirements plus a consultative relationship to prescribe select Schedule II drugs and benzodiazepines.

Where an Illinois NP works under a collaborative agreement, FNU's track rules let you use the physician side too. An FNP student's physician and PA hours can reach 40% of the total, and midwifery students may add physician preceptors while keeping a CNM or CM as their main preceptor where possible. One outreach point is Illinois-specific: each academic semester or quarter spent precepting a single APRN student is worth 10 CE hours toward APRN license renewal, capped at 30 per renewal period, provided the student's school documents it.

Illinois's rule for out-of-state programs

Five items are due from any out-of-state nursing program seeking student clinical placement in Illinois (the source is 68 Ill. Adm. Code 1300.340(n)). Granted approval holds for two years, annual reports keep it renewable, and the program's nursing faculty need Illinois RN licenses.

• proof that its home-state board approved or accredited it
• a placement request letter naming the clinical agencies and units and the time frame
• the course's syllabus
• its contract with the clinical facility, fully executed
• forms on faculty qualifications and on preceptors

Where the provision lives matters: it belongs to the RN program-approval part of the rules and never says if graduate or APRN programs like FNU's are covered. If it applies, filing is FNU's job; state board placement requirements are part of Clinical Credentialing's remit. Ask your Clinical Advisor early whether an Illinois site needs extra lead time. The same section requires facility preceptors to be approved and oriented by the program, present whenever you give care, and RN-licensed where you practice.

Licensing: why you need an Illinois RN license

FNU's compliance list calls for an unencumbered license (or compact eligibility) in each state hosting your clinicals, checked through Nursys Quick Confirm. Because Illinois is outside the compact, a Wisconsin, Iowa or Missouri multistate license does nothing here. You need a single-state Illinois license from IDFPR, unless your site is one of those, such as a military or IHS facility, that FNU says may take any US license.

Where Illinois students start looking

The Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro holds about 8.7 million Illinois residents; about 672,000 more live in the St. Louis metro's Illinois portion, and Peoria and Rockford each top 330,000. Large systems include Northwestern Medicine, Advocate Health Care, OSF HealthCare, Endeavor Health and UChicago Medicine. Think of them as a map of where Illinois clinicians practice; none has committed to FNU.

Begin with the Community Map. No Illinois-specific midwifery practice rule is on record. FNU's own targets apply: 40 births with a minimum of 8 in hospital, and any birth center must hold CABC accreditation.
