What Indiana looks like for an FNU student

Indiana is one of the states where, by FNU's account, its MSN and PGC graduates meet the licensing education standard for all four specialties, and New York's limits have no bearing here. Two of the four Indiana metros covered here cross state lines, which matters for licensing and for where you search.

The Board reviews pre-licensure programs only

The Indiana State Board of Nursing says it accredits every nursing program operating in Indiana that prepares people for initial licensure as an RN or LPN, and that it "does not review or accredit" RN-BSN or graduate nursing programs. Its rule on eligible programs, 848 IAC 1-2-4, covers only pre-licensure RN and PN programs.

Nothing in Indiana's rules on record requires out-of-state graduate programs to get Board approval before placing students. That leaves FNU's own process in charge. After your RCF accepts the CSAF, Clinical Credentialing works through the affiliation agreement, insurance certificates and preceptor file, a stretch FNU warns may run several months.

Collaborative agreements and who can precept

Indiana sits in AANP's reduced practice group because NPs there keep a physician collaborative agreement, regulated by the state, for at least one element of their practice. Your NP preceptor will therefore have a physician collaborator, and FNP students can place as much as 40% of their hours with physicians or PAs.

PMHNP students plan a different mix. A PMHNP, a PMHCNS with prescriptive authority or a psychiatrist can precept, psychiatrists with no time limit, and up to 135 hours can be with a master's-prepared licensed therapist. Your first accepted site needs a preceptor with psychiatric prescribing authority before FNU assigns a Clinical Bound date. The PMHNP preceptor page has the detail.

Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and two border metros

These 2025 Census figures show where Indiana's patient volume sits. Search there, but don't read the list as sites with any FNU commitment.

• Indianapolis-Carmel-Greenwood: about 2.21 million
• Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN: about 729,000 Indiana residents in a metro of 9.43 million
• Fort Wayne: about 466,000
• Louisville/Jefferson County, KY-IN: about 281,000 on the Indiana side of 1.40 million

Large systems include Indiana University Health, Community Health Network, Ascension St. Vincent, Franciscan Health and Parkview Health. Licensing, including telehealth across state lines

Indiana began recognizing multistate licenses on July 1, 2020. Any multistate license issued by your compact home state works at Indiana sites, and an Indiana one works in compact neighbors such as Kentucky and Ohio.

Telehealth needs more care. Because FNU applies licensing rules by patient location, a PMHNP telehealth panel with Illinois patients depends on Illinois licensing, and those hours draw down the 450-hour PMHNP telehealth allowance that applies from 2025 clinical starts. Nurse-midwifery students in Indiana

AANP's collaborative-agreement note is about NPs. Indiana's CNM rules sit outside this guide, so the Indiana State Board of Nursing is the place to check a midwife preceptor's standing. FNU's requirements travel with you: 40 births including eight or more in hospital, 40 labor management experiences, neonatal resuscitation certification kept current, and a CABC-accredited birth center if one is in your plan.
