FNU clinicals in Georgia: license rules that reach your preceptor
Students in any FNU track can train in Georgia, and the Georgia Board of Nursing doesn't approve out-of-state graduate programs. Georgia puts its weight on licenses instead: yours, your preceptor's, and a Georgia APRN authorization for whoever gives APRN clinical instruction.

Georgia in brief for FNU students
FNU's state license page lists Georgia among the states where its MSN and PGC programs meet educational requirements for CNM, FNP, PMHNP and WHNP licensure, and none of FNU's tracks is closed here. The Georgia Board of Nursing sits within the Office of the Georgia Secretary of State. Georgia's compact membership dates from January 19, 2018; AANP classes its NP practice as restricted.
FNU's basic model holds in Georgia: you line up the preceptor and site, your RCF accepts the CSAF, and Clinical Credentialing puts the affiliation agreement in place. The target is 750 clinical hours plus your track's visit counts, or 40 births with at least 8 in hospital for midwifery. How placement works at FNU walks through the order.
No Board approval, but license rules for everyone
The Board says it does not approve or regulate post-licensure programs, APRN programs included, so an out-of-state MSN or NP program needs no Board approval to place students in Georgia. Its separate statement that no out-of-state or online pre-licensure programs are approved for Georgia clinicals doesn't touch FNU's graduate tracks.
Licensure is where Georgia is firm. Georgia residents who study with an out-of-state school and log clinical hours at home must be licensed by Georgia or carry a multistate license that some other compact state issued. Faculty and preceptors teaching or working in Georgia, in person or electronically, must meet the same rule. For post-licensure APRN programs, the Board states that clinical instruction must be conducted by a nurse with an APRN authorization in Georgia.
That last line matters if your plan uses physicians or PAs, which FNU allows within limits, such as up to 40% of FNP hours. Confirm with your Clinical Advisor how Georgia's wording applies to your preceptor mix before anyone signs on.
Restricted practice and your preceptor's scope
AANP's Georgia fact sheet says NPs need physician delegation or supervision, and NP Schedule II prescribing is limited. You work under your preceptor's authority, so controlled-substance prescribing in your rotation follows the same limits. For PMHNP students, whose plan includes 300 medication-management visits, it's worth asking early how a practice handles Schedule II drugs.

Atlanta, then the rest of the state
Metro Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell had about 6.5 million people in the 2025 Census estimates, far more than Savannah (about 438,000), Augusta-Richmond County (about 430,000 on the Georgia side) or Columbus (about 266,000 in Georgia). Piedmont Healthcare, Wellstar Health System, Emory Healthcare, Northside Hospital and Grady Health System are large Georgia systems. Treat them as examples of where preceptors practice; FNU approves every site, and none is lined up for FNU students.
Augusta's metro reaches into South Carolina and Columbus's into Alabama, and both neighbors are compact states. Outside the metros, FNU's rural focus points toward community clinics and small practices. The Georgia Department of Public Health is the state health agency.
Georgia's preceptor tax credit and FNU rotations
Georgia's Preceptor Tax Incentive Program gives a state tax credit to licensed Georgia physicians, dentists, APRNs and PAs who precept without pay in community settings. The AHEC page says HB 144 revised and extended it, with annual registration required from 2026. The credit applies only to students in Georgia medical, dental, NP or PA programs, so preceptors of FNU students don't qualify. FNU's honorarium and its 6-hour CE course are what it offers preceptors instead.
License checks, midwifery and why students choose us
Georgia clinicals are covered by a Georgia license or by a multistate license from your compact home state; with telehealth, the patient's state matters as well. Georgia hasn't enacted the APRN Compact. Georgia's midwifery practice law isn't covered here, so midwifery students should plan to FNU's rules, ideally with a CNM or CM as primary preceptor, and ask their Clinical Advisor about anything local. Questions FNU students ask
Does my Georgia preceptor need a Georgia license?
Either one issued by Georgia or a multistate license held through another compact state. The Board applies its licensure rule to faculty and preceptors teaching in Georgia, in person or electronically. For APRN programs it adds that clinical instruction must be conducted by a nurse holding a Georgia APRN authorization. Clinical Credentialing checks preceptor credentials, but raise any doubt with your Clinical Advisor early.
Can a preceptor supervise my Georgia telehealth visits from another state?
Georgia's licensing rule covers preceptors teaching in Georgia electronically as well as in person, and FNU requires you to meet licensure where each patient lives. So a telehealth rotation with Georgia patients can need Georgia coverage for both you and your preceptor, and it counts against your track's telehealth cap. Can I do Georgia clinicals if I live in South Carolina or Alabama?
Yes. FNU has no home-state rule, and Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama are all in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so a multistate license from your home state covers Georgia. Georgia's preceptor and APRN-instruction rules still apply. If you later change sites, the catalog says you do it with the RCF for the region where you live.
Will I see controlled-substance prescribing in a Georgia NP rotation?
Within limits. AANP says Georgia restricts NP Schedule II prescribing and requires physician delegation or supervision, and you practice under your preceptor. If medication management is central to your plan, a psychiatrist is one option for PMHNP students: FNU sets no time limit with psychiatrists, and your RCF approves the preceptor mix.
